Captain Travis has operated many different boats in Alaska during his career but Obsession is by far his favorite. The boat was designed specifically for fishing. Her wide beam and deep V hull makes her a stable platform even in choppy waters. Her hydrodynamic design lets her slip through the waves rather than over the top of them and the large back deck gives plenty of room for everyone to fish at the same time.

Gear

Kachemak Sunrise with Jigging Gear

Jigging

  • Rods- Shimano Trevalla Medium Weight Spinning Rods

    Length- 6’6”

    Reels - Penn Spinfisher VI

    Line - 50-60lb Spider Wire

Lure/Bait- Standard rig is a double dropper rig with 2 hoochies and a weight at the bottom. This set up allows you to consistently catch 2 fish at the same time. We also use Diamond jigs, grubs, mooching rigs and free swimming bait with no weight.

  • We often use jigging gear for every species, but especially for rockfish and ling cod. This gear is great all around equipment for saltwater fishing in Alaska. Its lite enough to feel a soft salmon strike but sturdy enough to hoist triple digit halibut off the bottom. You can drop your lure quickly to the bottom or flip it out to rocks feeding on the surface.

Bottom

  • Rods- Shimano Trevalla heavy weight jigging Rods

    Length- 6ft

Reels - Penn GT two speed

    Line - 80-100lbs Spider Wire

Rig- Standard halibut rig is a 2.5’ section of 500lb ganjen with a pig tail swivel in the middle with the ability to slide. a 1-3lb weight is attached here. The Lower swivel connects the ganjen with a 2’ section of 250lb mono tipped with a 17 ot circle hook.

Bait- Herring, Salmon, Octopus, Greenling, Dogfish, Cod

  • Halibut can grow to massive size, so the fishing equipment needs to be strong enough to pull a 300lb fish off the bottom but light enough for women and children to use without getting fatigued. Captain Travis has found the best set up for these fish. Shimano Trevalla rods and Penn 2 speed GT reels. This set up has proven itself over and over again in strength, reliability and use-ability.

Salmon Trolling Gear

Trolling

  • Rods- Shimano Torium medium weight trolling rods

    Length- 8’6”ft

    Reels - Shimano Charter Special

    Line - 30lb mono

Rig- 14” Flasher followed by a 50lb section of flurocarbon with a spoon, hoochie or small herring attached

Downrigger - Scotty Electric Downrigger, 12lb downrigger weight

  • We provide the highest quality gear available. Shimano rods and reels cleaned and respooled twice a season. 4 Scotty Electric downriggers, 12lb downrigger weights, a variety of the best spoons, flashers, dodgers, baits and a few custom secret weapons.
