Pacific Halibut
Hippoglossus stenolepis
Any Halibut over about 25lbs is female. So when we are chasing big ones, they are “big girls”
These are the fish that everyone is pumped about. They are not only fun to catch but they are incredibly tasty.
Halibut are one of the largest boney fish in the ocean. They have potential to reach tremendous size. We fish for halibut right near the bottom in depths ranging from 20ft to 300ft. The average size halibut caught on a fishing charter in Homer is around 15lbs but at Blount Adventure we do whatever we can to catch above average (see recent catches here). We catch triple digit halibut all the time. Conservative bag limits and plentiful feed and space have kept the Homer Halibut fishery world class for decades.
Halibut fishing season starts in late March and runs through October with the peak usually in late July.
People who say “Halibut don’t fight” or “reeling in a halibut is like lugging a sheet of plywood off the bottom” do not know what they are talking about. Halibut fight. The truth is that most charters use “pool cue” rods and reels designed only for the very largest halibut. Our Shimano Trevala rods make the battle a lot less of a chore and more of a dance. Halibut are incredibly strong swimmers. They are almost entirely muscle. Halibut have spooled many reels in Alaska making runs that would make you swear you just hooked a submarine. Fighting big halibut on light tackle is the most fun anyone can have with their clothes on.
Jigging is very effective at catching BIG BUTS. Many of the largest fish brought in every year hit a lead head grub or metal jigging spoon.
Typical Set up for Halibut is a size 17/0 Circle Hook baited with Herring behind a 1-3lb weight.
