July 2022

MY OH MY IT’S ALASKA in JULY!!!

The fishing has been consistently good for almost everything we fish for through the entire month with a couple exceptions when the weather sucks! Boat is running great! Nevin is proving his worth tens time over and we are just in a rhythm of killing it.

Here is how it has been going by species.

Lingcod in HOMER ALASKA

LINGS

Deckhand Nevin with a couple of Sea Dragons (aka Ling Cod)

Lingcod are open but they have been hit or miss most of the month due to weather and the fact that the majority of the Lingcod Biomass is still under 35” making targeted Ling fishing kind of a pain. When we are targeting them we seem to release between 60-90% no matter where we go because they are too small. Lots of Lings in the 33-34.75” range this year so hopefully 2023 will produce more legal Ling Cod.

However, like all of the biggest Lings I have ever seen caught, The big ones come as “hitchhikers” grabbing onto either a rockfish, salmon or halibut thats already hooked. Both Lingcod pictured here were “hitchhikers” one on a rockfish and one on a under 28” halibut.

Kings have been holding strong!

This photo was from Wednesday July 6th, we stacked up on King salmon and also picked up a few early silvers.

Check out the size of those King SALMON!

The larger halibut are pushing 85lbs for reference

Big Halibut

Halibut!

Halibut have been good to great at the Barrens and in the western inlet all month with consistent catches of large fish around Perl and East Chugach islands as well. This fish was caught in the infamous L.O.G. north of Ushagat island in 312ft of water 7/29/22.
